Scottsdale 2008

Scottsdale was a great show for The Trowbridges, Ltd. Team. Seven lucky snowbirds got the chance to make a dash for the warm weather, and didn’t disappoint when it came to competing successfully in return. Prince Charming EA and Kristen Cuneo bested their last year’s Reserve US National Championship with a Scottsdale Championship in the Purebred Country Pleasure Junior Owner to Ride division after turning in an impeccable performance Monday night. Kristen also made her show-ring debut on Downtown Doll EA, boding well for an exciting year of competition for these two great youth horse-rider combos.

Sally Wheeler and Captain Courageous PA
Bluebeard NA enjoyed his first trip to Scottsdale since his inaugural voyage as a four year old, and this time decided to win unanimously, both in the Half Arabian Country Driving class and Championship with Mary, and in the Half Arabian Country Pleasure Adult Amateur division with his owner, Susie Schramm. Also bringing home a Championship and first place award for GT and Susie Schramm’s Matilda Bay Farm was their home-bred MBF Burning Springs, winning the Purebred Country Pleasure Junior Horse Championship and class at his first major horse show event.

Dee Frey and friends
The Half Arabian gelding Kaboom made the Scottsdale Show exciting for everyone, most especially for co-owners Rosemary Fitzgerald and Dee Frey with a unanimous win in the Half Arabian Country Pleasure Limit class on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in the Wendell Arena, and a Top Ten win in the Championship Sunday afternoon. As the win photographs will attest, we’re thinking that this event marked Kaboom’s last appearance for a while in the Country Pleasure division for a whilealthough he fulfilled all of the class specs with room to spare, it appeared at this show that he’s found a new gear that will probably be better put to use in the English divisions this year!

Burning Springs MBF, bred and owned by Susie and GT Schramm of Matilda Bey Farm, PB Country Pleasure Junior Horse Champion
And last but certainly far from least, Harlem Superior’s first Half Arabian winner hit the Scottsdale grounds, when the young Trowbridges, Ltd. entry Ginger Rodgers TA brought home a top ten award in the Yearling Half Arabian fillies class. Charismatic and personable, she was a great crowd pleaser throughout the week, both in the show ring and at the stalls greeting visitors, and was a great representative of her handsome and athletic sire, who is standing one more year at Trowbridges, Ltd. before returning to owner Joan Hamilton of the famed Kalarama Farms.

Kaboom

Trowbridges, Ltd. Annual Christmas Open House
On a beautiful New England winter day December 15, we once again opened the barn doors and invited any and all to come and enjoy a day getting to know the Arabian horse. Now in its fourteenth year, our Christmas Open House has become part of many of the area native’s holiday routines, and this year’s brilliant weather brought out over three hundred people to the farm to enjoy the day with the horses.
This is an event that we advertise primarily in our local newspapers and lifestyle magazines, and typically ninety nine percent of the audience are non-horse or non-Arabian enthusiasts. We always have plenty of carrots, cookies and breed information on hand, and after a presentation of ten to fifteen horses at liberty, we end the afternoon with every child getting the opportunity to have their picture taken on an Arabian horse. This year, we had so many young people looking for that honor that we drafted two “Santa Clauses”, HHF Radioactive, owned by Justine and Andy Aymye, and TA Beywatch, owned at the time by Candice and Frank Milano. Both horses performed admirably, to rave reviews.
An added feature this year was Marshall and Rae Paige Schwartz’ wonderful breed ambassador, Ahmeer Fadreeyn, who joined us with trainer Hugh Parker to perform his liberty routine, first with Hugh and then with a number of the youngsters in the audience. Ahmeer was a definite crowd favorite, and topped off yet another wonderful Christmas event for us, reminding all of us why we love the Arabian horse and bringing joy to a whole host of new admirers.
Trowbridges, Ltd. Teams With the Youthlight Foundation
We’re excited to announce that The Youthlight Foundation, a non-profit organization that mentors autistic children, has purchased the purebred gelding TA Beywatch to spearhead its new animal mentoring program, and that we will be participating in Youthlight’s therapeutic riding program here at the farm.
Therapeutic riding was first introduced in the United States in the late 1960’s. The approach utilizes instruction in horseback riding along with horsemanship skills to assist children with developmental or psychological disabilities. Research shows that participants can experience physical, emotional and mental rewards. The unique relationship formed between a child and the horse can also lead to increased confidence, patience, and self-esteem in individuals with mental, emotional or developmental disabilities.
Therapeutic riding is a Animal-assisted activity. Animal-assisted therapy is a therapeutic tool, because of the contact with another living being and the special bond that people form with animals. However, horses provide more than just skills acquired from a relationship with an animal learning to care for an animal. Riding a horse provides a unique and often profound activity for many children. The motion of the horse, concentration needed to acquire riding skills and the communication between the instructor and the rider allow people with a variety of disabilities to benefit from riding.
Riding helps the children interact with others to form meaningful relationships. Building a relationship with an animal is very rewarding in many aspects for a person with an emotional, social or psychological disability. The trust and loyalty an animal shows for children demonstrates how important these attributes are in personal relationships. The horse also helps the children feel in control of the situation because there is a direct correlation between action and reaction.
To learn how to care for and ride a horse, a child must also be able to communicate efficiently with the horse and the instructor. In this way, riding is a very social activity, but is less daunting to children who are uncomfortable in social situations. The experience of interacting with horses empowers children and enables them to connect on a personal level. It is our feeling that the Arabian horse is tremendously well suited for this endeavor due to its unparalleled ability to connect with human beings after centuries of interaction with people on a close level, and Beywatch is an exceptional individual who has already excelled at connecting non-horse people with the Arabian breed.
